International students experience the craftsmanship of guqin carving and lacquer gourd making

To inherit and promote China's excellent traditional culture and boost cultural exchange and mutual learning, on the afternoon of June 6th, Guo Rongmei, Director of the International Cooperation Office, Teacher Sun Chengdong from the School of Architectural Engineering, and over 60 international students jointly participated in an intangible cultural heritage (ICH) handicraft cultural experience activity. They immersed themselves in the cultural charm of traditional Chinese ICH skills - guqin (Chinese zither) making and lacquered gourd craftsmanship.

At the beginning of the activity, Teacher Sun elaborated on the production techniques and playing skills of the guqin. From material selection and crafting to the elaborate structural combination step by step, every link embodies profound cultural heritage and the ingenuity and wisdom of the ancients, giving international students a new understanding of this ancient musical instrument. When introducing the playing skills, Teacher Sun gave a live demonstration. With fingertips gently plucking the strings, the melodious guqin music instantly filled the entire activity venue, arousing the students' eagerness to have a try. Everyone gathered around the guqin, carefully twanging the strings and attempting to play their own melodies.

Subsequently, under the guidance of Teacher Sun, the students tried their hands at making lacquered gourd crafts. As a traditional handicraft, the production process of lacquered gourds is extremely particular. Under the teacher's patient guidance, the international students concentrated fully on the task. Through multiple delicate processes such as painting, polishing, and burnishing, they made the gourds present a warm and jade-like luster. After some hard work, all international students successfully completed their unique lacquered gourd decorative works, with proud and joyful expressions on everyone's faces.

This ICH handicraft cultural experience activity not only allowed international students to personally experience the production process of ICH handicrafts but also enabled them to gain an in-depth understanding of the broad and profound Chinese traditional culture, adding a unique color to their study and life in China. It is believed that through such activities, traditional Chinese ICH culture will plant the seeds of inheritance and dissemination in the hearts of international students and shine brightly in a broader world.
